Indonesian traffic makes distances misleading: a 40 km drive between Canggu and Ubud routinely takes two hours, and on Lombok the south-coast beaches are separated by hills and unsealed access roads with almost no ride-hailing coverage. Hiring a private driver with a car for the day — or for a whole week — is the standard way travellers get around both islands.
Bali is the busiest: Ubud and central Bali, the Bukit peninsula and Uluwatu, the east coast towards Amed, and airport or Sanur harbour transfers for the Nusa Penida boats. On Lombok drivers cover the Kuta beaches, the Senaru waterfalls in the north and the Gili harbours at Bangsal and Teluk Nare.
A full day is usually quoted for around eight to ten hours and includes the vehicle, fuel and the driver. Entrance fees, parking and meals are normally extra. Booking a week or more automatically applies 15% off the daily rate, and 25% from 21 days.
Ride-hailing pickups are restricted or simply unavailable in several areas of Bali and much of Lombok, and getting a car back from a remote beach can take a long time. For long days, families, luggage or the mountain roads, a booked car with a local driver avoids the problem entirely.
