Siem Reap rewards travellers who can move on their own schedule. Hotels sit in town, the airport is an hour away, the temples spread over hundreds of square kilometres, and the lake and countryside lie in opposite directions. A private driver with an air-conditioned car ties all of it together: you decide the route in the morning, change it during the day, and keep your bags in the car between stops.
Siem Reap is a small town with long distances around it: the airport sits roughly 50 km west of the centre, the Tonlé Sap villages lie south, and the countryside runs north towards Phnom Kulen. Hiring a car with a local driver is the simplest way to move between them. You agree the hours, the driver picks you up at your hotel, waits at each stop and drops you back — no negotiating a new ride each time, no waiting for a ride-hailing app in places where coverage is thin.
A full day in Siem Reap is normally counted as around eight hours and is the most common booking; half-days suit an afternoon by the lake or a short countryside loop. Each driver on Find a Driver sets their own daily price, visible on their profile before you contact them. The rate covers the vehicle, fuel and the driver's time — entrance fees, temple passes, guides and meals are always paid separately. Longer or out-of-town days usually cost more than a day spent close to town.
Most travellers book their Siem Reap driver for several consecutive days: a day in the temple park, a day north to Phnom Kulen, a day on the lake. Keeping one driver means one price to agree, a car that knows your schedule, and no renegotiating each morning. Weekly bookings come with 15% off the daily rate, applied automatically when you choose your dates.
Pub Street, the Old Market, Angkor National Museum and the riverside are walkable, so a car is rarely needed inside the centre itself. Where a private driver earns its keep is everything beyond: the temple park, the countryside roads north, the lake to the south, and evening trips out to Phare circus or a dinner spot away from the centre. Cars are air-conditioned, which matters most between March and June.
Popular full days include the Angkor Archaeological Park, Banteay Srei combined with Kbal Spean about 35–50 km north, Phnom Kulen for the waterfall and reclining Buddha, and the floating villages of Kampong Phluk or Kampong Khleang on Tonlé Sap. Siem Reap drivers also run long-distance transfers: Phnom Penh is roughly 315 km and around six hours by road, Battambang about three hours, Kampong Thom two, and the Poipet border with Thailand around two and a half.
