Cambodia is a country of long, slow road journeys: Siem Reap to Phnom Penh is around 315 km and six hours, the Angkor park alone covers some 400 km², and the countryside roads towards Phnom Kulen or Koh Ker have little public transport. Hiring a private driver with an air-conditioned car is the normal way travellers move around — you agree the days and the route, and the same driver stays with you for the whole trip.
Almost every trip starts in Siem Reap, the base for the Angkor temples, the Tonlé Sap floating villages and the countryside to the north. From there drivers also run long-distance days to Battambang, Kampong Thom, Phnom Penh and the Poipet border with Thailand. Prices are set by each driver and shown on their profile before you get in touch.
A full day in Cambodia is normally counted as around eight hours and covers the vehicle, fuel and the driver's time. Temple passes, site entrance fees, guides and meals are always paid separately. Book seven days or more and 15% comes off the daily rate automatically; from 21 days the discount rises to 25%.
Drivers know the roads, the timings and the best order to visit the temples, but licensed site guides are hired separately at the entrance. Your driver waits at each stop, keeps bags and water in the car, and adapts the plan during the day — which is the practical difference from a fixed group tour.
